As part of our commitment to continually improve our service and to help our clients meet their legal obligations, we continue to update the Legal Registers on our website and provide free quarterly legal compliance updates to anyone who subscribes. The purpose of these updates is to ensure you stay up to date with any changes in your legal compliance obligations, our updates can also be kept and can be used as evidence that your business is staying up to date with any changes in the legislation, this can be very helpful at audit time.
The purpose of this legislation is to regulate the manufacture, importation, sale, use and transportation of liquid, solid and compressed acetylene gas as well as the compression of that gas and the filling of cylinders with this gas by means of a series of defined duties, safety and licensing requirements.
The ASR includes, in certain circumstances, the requirement for a flame arrestor to stop the progression of a flame resulting from the decomposition or uncontrolled combustion of acetylene gas, which could lead to an explosion.
Also, those wishing to manufacture, compress and/or fill cylinders (defined in the ASR 2014) with compressed acetylene gas (defined n the ASR 2014) will be required to hold a license to do so. It is recommended that acetylene gas is only used by those trained to use it using suitably designed handling equipment.
The cylinders filled with compressed acetylene gas must be coloured ‘Maroon’ (RAL 3007) on both the shoulder and body of the cylinder. Acetylene users with more complex or specialist needs should check the information provided by their acetylene gas supplier and the manufacturer of the equipment being used before it is first put into use. It is recommended that modifications to equipment used/to be used with acetylene gas should only be made by those trained to do this; even changes that appear minor may pose significant risks
